SIR LINDSAY HOYLE ELECTED SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE OF COMMONS
November 07, 2019
Sir Lindsay Hoyle was ‘dragged’ to the Speaker’s chair on Monday evening after being elected Speaker to replace John Bercow who stepped down last week.
Lindsay Hoyle has been a good friend of Gibraltar and has visited the Rock on many occasions. Chief Minister Fabian Picardo tweeted his congratulations as follows:
As is customary, upon the passage of the motion, the speaker-elect is expected to show reluctance at being chosen; she or he is customarily "dragged unwillingly" by MPs to the speaker's bench. This custom has its roots in the speaker's original function of communicating the Commons' opinions to the monarch which could bring on him/her the death penalty.
