NO WAY JOSE!
September 16, 2020
That was Fabian’s reply at the UN to the proposal for a post Brexit relationship where Gibraltar would be taken by the hand by Spain into the EU, with a shared sovereignty deal with UK.
It was the answer to Jose Manuel Garcia Margallo, post the 2016 referendum, when he was predicting that within three years the Spanish flag would be flying on our Rock.
Now we learn from a highly respected publication “Politico” and a Spanish journalist, who has worked for EFE in Madrid and London and is clearly well connected to sources of information, that Spain is pushing the inclusion of Gibraltar into Schengen.
However, this seems to be more than just a solution to the hard border of a hard Brexit, it seems to be intended to do more than achieve fluidity at the frontier with Spain and the EU, on first of January 2021.
It is part of Spain’s strategy of “shared responsibility” with UK over the Rock’s affairs, after Brexit, as the replacement for the previous shared sovereignty - the so called “generous offer” made at the UN after 2016.
The 97% of us who voted to stay in the EU in 2016, voted to stay as we were then, with the terms of membership negotiated in 1972 which pre-dated Spain’s entry by 14 years.
This is no longer available to us and, if the UK is out, we are out with the UK.
Our external affairs are conducted on our behalf by UK, as provided for by our Constitution, and this “responsibility” cannot be “shared” with anyone, and least of all with Spain.
