"NOT AN INCH OF GIBRALTAR WILL BE GIVEN AWAY" - REITERATES THE CHIEF MINISTER
September 16, 2020
Reports in the Spanish press have recently intimated that Spain is pushing for Gibraltar to be part of Schengen and that they would be willing to ‘represent’ us in the EU. Local social media and harbingers of gloom, have taken these reports to heart and have been concerned, to say the least, about being sold out by our Government in the Brexit negotiations which will be drawing to a close by the end of October.
In his National Day address, Fabian Picardo said that any Brexit deal which was negotiated would be safe for Gibraltar and will fully respects our sovereignty, jurisdiction and control over our land, our sea and our air. These words were echoed by Prime Minister Boris Johnson in his own National Day message to Gibraltar. He said that “ no sliver of rock, no fragment of national sovereignty will be given away because on National Day we celebrate, not just the unique and special culture of the Rock and its people, but that momentous September day in 1967 when a whopping 99.64% of you stood up and said, “We choose to be part of the British family of nations, now and always.” And as long as I’m Prime Minister, that’s exactly the way things are going to stay.”
This still did not satisfy some and the Chief Minister made the following statement on Monday to allay peoples concerns.
“Last week was National Day on Thursday and it was magnificent to see how our people responded to the Government’s call for responsibility and prudence in the celebrations, in particular, our young people. So often you hear complaints about young people generally and in Gibraltar and yet this week, young people were really understanding of the need to be responsible, of the need to celebrate in a different way. So, my thanks to all of Gibraltar for being so responsible and prudent in the way that we celebrated last week and in particular my thanks to the First Ministers of all of the devolved administrations. To Mark, to Arlene and to Nicola and, of course to the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Boris Johnson for their messages to Gibraltar to congratulate us on the celebration of our National Day in these different pandemic times.
“This is also a time of negotiation as the pandemic is coming back. As we were celebrating National Day, we are also in the thick of the negotiations before the end of the on Brexit and as I said on National Day, this is an area where the Government of Gibraltar, led by me will give not an inch. You are reading stuff in the Spanish newspapers, in some European papers, which is inspired by Spanish newspapers, which is putting a Spanish version of events. The Spanish claims, what they want. Absolutely ignore those. They are putting the traditional Spanish position. We will never agree to anything that dilutes British sovereignty, jurisdiction or control over Gibraltar, in the negotiations we are tough, we are the hawks. We won’t allow them to get anything past us.
“Please just don’t fall into the trap that some people are falling for in social media of believing the Spanish version of events. Believe your Government, we are here to fight for you, to fight for our Gibraltar, to defend our Gibraltar and remember, the hawks are in Government now.”
